urban design framework

group work

3 – empire to barry hertzog
a lack of captions with accompany the images and when maps are used, a legend is not complete.  what is residual space?  institutions on site page is very helpful and well done.  on the photographic storyboard, what constitutes left and right images?  north is always facing the top of the page.  the graphic shows a – b as an east-west or west-east corridor, in future use north and south of empire.  left and right are confusing and lack precision.  pedestrian perspectives page is difficult to decipher.  so is the other perspectives page.  why not simply use images to portray precisely what the different views are?  where are the sections + elevations taken?  what are the structures and streets/roads?  what is it exactly that we are looking at and why?  highway interchange image shows no congestion and the image chosen shows the onramp the m1 south.  the historical development page is very thin.  what exactly is it meant to be showing?  architecture and programmes?  heritage sites and landmarks?  too many different fonts + font size on the conclusion page.  why?  this makes the info difficult to read.  overall the document lacks structure and coherency, but has wonderful graphic and image moments.

2 -- empire rd / kingsway - barry hertzog to main rd
base map would have been enhanced with road names, building or area location to help orientate.  as much as the our perception of the site page is welcome, empirical research requires more distinguished observations than the authors, unless one is seen as a qualified artist.  base plan could and should have been stronger incorporating bunting campus, sabc precinct, sentech tower to fuller grasp the complexity of the site.  a very good document with a somewhat thin conclusion [why?] with an improved graphic morphological acuity.  sections would have enhanced the project, providing another much-required layer.
6.7/10

1 – from main to portland – a journey through empire
a good and thorough document with lots of potential but incomplete. base map should have incorporated westdene dam and the green space around it, which has huge potential and is a great resource but unfortunately was not utilized but the group.  why the repetition of images and graphics?  the project suffers from an overall coherency and narrative.  load amounts of work seem have to been done without an all-encompassing point.  the introduction succinctly states: understanding an area is a critical part of urban design. one must know the context of their given site before anything can happen. analysis and mapping become highly important as they give insight into the social, economical and physical characteristics that will help determine the future and direction of the site. but then the analysis and mapping are done in a nonlinear manner, which confuses the structure of the document.
what about conclusion and reference page?  the document is incomplete with wonderful use of graphics, which have come a long way.
5.5/10

general comments.  captions are required for images and graphics.  images or graphics should not pixelate.  font should be consistent.  if drawings have no legend, then the drawing should contain all the text as a layer to make it legible.  the use of plans, sections and elevations is imperative and documents cannot do without them.

very clear goals and objectives. what will happen at the potential sites for development?  what kind of development?  this has to be explored spatially.  parts of the analysis were covered in the initial project phase by group work.  why the repetition?  get into the project and start designing in the areas you have identified.
3/10

saffiya daya
no contents page.
clear vision and objectives.  demonstrate this in your framework and area of intervention as you have done in illustrating your objectives – graphically.  use sections.  the drawing on page 8 is an excellent start, but you need to layer it for the drawing to communicate the objectives and it also should show how it engages with the other side of the street.

transport orientated development
contents page needs re-structuring.  where is page 3, the study area?  on the what is transit orientated development , page 4 + 5, needs to be further explored and explained with more systemic articulation, diagrams and more in-depth academic explanation.  photographs used here do not add value to expressing what tods are, instead somewhat confuse.  there is plenty of literature which explains tods, find it and use it as precedent.  your framework hangs on this.  vision and objectives page 6.  the contents page it is vision and objectives, on page 6 it’s the other way round.  choose 1 and stick with it.  be consistent.  why is the vision a larger font?  movement + precedent pages are not clear.  on the proposed development, what is the graphic demonstrating?  what are the orange, red, purple and yellow structures?
be consistent with font size and reference.

reconnecting johannesburgs to johannesburg
project needs to be move from being 1 dimensional diagrams to being 3 dimensional space in the spaces of intervention segments.  some of these diagrams need articulation in the 3rd dimension and sections need to be employed and an overall structure with structuring plans.

promote an outdoor experience
excellent mapping and now you must take this:
                    seek to cull the preconceived notion attached to sidewalks and transform them into “sustainable environments that enable individual creativity to thrive and contribute to community development, identity, cohesion and efficiency done through the physical environment” (hand-out 04_project 4, 2011);
                    create unique, safe and comfortable environments and experiences when traversing the spine through any forms of transportation (motorised, bicycle or foot);
                    integrate the buildings and usages along the spine onto the street;
                    develop an environment that enhances quality of life to encourage a greater usage of the spine;
and make it into space, whilst maintaining your theme and adding a 3rd dimension.

a lack of a contents page makes the project difficult to navigate.  the 3 sites have to be articulated in plan to explicitly demonstrate where they are in space.  it is not sufficient to use images and not state where they are photographed.  later in the documented this is demonstrated using plans.  what do the graphics and images accompanying the plans mean?  project lacks clarity and structure and feels incomplete.
3.5/10

sello mphafudi
contents page?  problem statement is too thin.  site needs a legend.  articulate academically the conceptual framework.  content at concept at metropolitan scale and beyond is good, but be wary of pixelated graphics, these are not acceptable.  document possesses some wonderful moments, but it needs to be stitched together to work as a whole and to have a linear consistent narrative.  principle [principal]framework not existing
far too many spell errors in the document.
3.9/10

atiyyah saloojee
contents page? font should be arial.  project is somewhat too schematic to give back constructive feedback.  buildings have heights and on page 4 + 5, this should also be demonstrated using all 3 axis.  use the objectives set out on page 2 to guide the project.  page 1 is a pleasure and an inspiration read.  this should be the essence of the project.  turn these into space.

tokelo seturumane
expand the introduction.  articulate, using text, the problem statement.  site graphic shows roads, streets, movement routes and not necessarily “the site in context.”  site tends to have boundaries, define these.  define the open space systems, as in, what is private open space, public open and residual space – especially residual space.  layer the drawing with orienteering or orientating text such as empire, jan smuts, gas works etc.  articulate concept from claredon to portland.  page 10 – what does the title mean?  be clear with the use of precedents and choose appropriate precedent.  how do the tourist coming from the garden court hotel get to the market area because currently empire is hostile and acts as a divider between the north and south sides of the road?  how is your project dealing with issues of densification or intensification, employment opportunities and other issues highlighted in the handout?  project needs clarity and articulation.

ingrid sott
in your introduction to your framework, you talk about types of roads, what are the others?  graphically demonstrate this: a major portion of the site (yellow) offers very little pedestrian experience: lack of street furniture, inactive edge and building frontages, with plans, sections and elevations.  precedent has to be articulated further and state why the choice.  concepts pages are confusing.  in traffic flows page, articulate pedestrian concentration, as in time, day etc.  when you have images showing proposed, also show current situation.  explain the hierarchy of nodes page.  the document is somewhat difficult to follow, with parts of it pointing the reader elsewhere.  it needs to be much crisper, complete and clearer.  a good beginning but it is time to focus.

nokwazi zimu
vibrant hub
incomplete contents page.  elaborate on the theme, problem statement, vision and concepts.  documents require clarity and consistency with a proper structure.  these principles
1. to allow for more space on the pavements so that pedestrians are able to move with ease (livability)
2. to create a bicycle lane so students are able to ride their bicycles to school (livability)
3. to promote better access to the bus rapid transit system and other public transport systems along the site (accessibility)
4. consider more public furniture, such as benches at the bus stops, shelters for the bus stops and lighting to enhance safety (safety ) 5. mixed-use buildings with uses such as residential, commercial, public amenities and parking (densification).
6. to enhance porosity along the spine which will enhance vibrancy (vibrancy).
have to expressed implicitly using plans, sections and elevations.  the beauty of the graphics is undermined by a lack of structure and coherency.  be systemic and thorough in the narrative, but most of all, the narrative has to be linear and concise.  explore space through sections in your proposed densities and be consistent with colour.
